When I was sixteen, I wrote my first (bad) screenplay. I dreamed of seeing my work on the big or small screen one day. 37 years have gone by, but the spark from that initial dream has never been extinguished.
The next adventure of my life involves building a production company from scratch to produce films and TV shows based on my books. My plan is to form a limited partnership company for each project produced by Ruby Finch Pictures, and I’m looking for partners to join me on this adventure.
Have you ever wanted to be involved in the film industry? Do you believe, like I do, that there’s a more inspiring, joyful, and healthier way to make movies and TV shows in a supportive environment, without working sixteen-hour days and having a top-down hierarchy structure on set?

I worked for years as a background performer in Vancouver. I loved a few aspects of a modern set (craft services, fun costumes, cool props) but I hated the long hours, the power dynamics, the stress of being yelled at, the tiered structures where the important people thrived and the not-so-important people were constantly reminded that they didn’t really matter.
At Ruby Finch Pictures, everyone matters. Our vision is to form committees to decide on every aspect of what happens on set. We want to work no more than ten-hour production days. We aim to pay every person on set fairly but at scale, then every person receives a bonus if the show or film succeeds at the exhibition or streaming stage. Check-in circles and daily debriefs will be part of every shooting day. Team leads from each department will handle problems or conflict with other team leads on a daily basis. Our guiding principle at Ruby Finch Pictures is No Assholes Allowed.
The goal is to make the process of filmmaking fun, collaborative, and happy—from the first day of preproduction to signing contracts for licensing the movie or TV show. We plan to choose each person who works with us carefully and intentionally, so we only hire once and create a pipeline of talent for future productions.
Our dream is to make programming that feels intuitively courageous. We want to trust our instincts, our artistry, our uniquely human talents and emotions. Ruby Finch Pictures will refuse all forms of generative AI. Together, we celebrate what it means to be alive.
If any of this sounds intriguing to you—as a financial backer, a craftsperson on set, a pre-production organiser, an editor, a locations scout, a whiz with a spreadsheet, a crafty dynamo, a grip, a visionary with the camera, or anything I failed to mention here—please get in touch with me at julianne@rubyfinchbooks.com.
We’re building this team now. It’s going to be exciting, revolutionary, uncharted territory in the NonDē film movement (NonDē means non-dependent). If any of this speaks to your soul and interests you, please reach out to me. There’s no time like now to get this underway.
